Deana Williams

Deana's Story

I believe in being an active participant in bringing about positive changes in my life. As a young child, I faced a lot of trials, but it has made me into the strong and independent person I am today. I grew up without my father, which had a tremendous impact on my life. I started to feel as if I wasn’t good enough, until I realized that things happen for a reason which is why I push myself even harder currently. Not having anyone to take to father events at my school really took a toll on me as I was younger. My mother suffered an injury at work that has led to long-term disability, but she always made sure I had what I needed to succeed. All of this pushed me to do my best to make my mother and myself proud. I enrolled in activities such as plays, spelling bees, and math derbies in elementary school and middle school, which really boosted my self-confidence.

As I entered high school, the question of college weighed heavily on my mind. I started to ask myself,  “What will I major in?” and, “What steps do I need to take to become successful?” I refuse to fail, so I strive for greatness. I enrolled in all AP courses, and I signed up for the National Beta Club & National Honor Society; both of these commitments gave me opportunities to go out into the community to serve others and to become the leader that I am today. This then lead me to start looking into colleges that will help me fulfill my dreams.

Attending college will help me encounter new experiences and meet new people on my path to long-term success. College will also help me carry out my career plans so that I can become the person that I know I am destined to be.  I will major in psychology because I want to become a psychiatrist, to study the human mind, and to help others with the problems that they face. I will minor in business management because I want to own my own clinic someday. My ultimate goal is to receive my doctorate. I believe that all the hard work I put into my academic study demonstrates my commitment to academic and professional achievement. I have learned so much from my coursework that has brought me to where I am today.

Overall, dreaming big gives you hope and opportunity, but it starts with believing in yourself. It raises your self-confidence and gives you the ability to conquer anything. If I didn’t dream big, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I wouldn’t have experienced all that I have experienced if I didn’t take a leap of faith and just go out and achieve my goals. Life has taken me through many trials, but I have learned that with perseverance and dedication I can be successful. With that being said, I firmly believe that my future will be filled with excellence, and I will flourish as an individual during the process.
